5 Ways to Beat the January Blues

Everyone has their good days and bad days regardless of the calendar, but for a lot of people January seems to be more difficult than other months of the year.

With Blue Monday upon us (supposedly the third Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year, although this is not scientifically proven…) we thought we’d share some tips on how to beat the January Blues.

1️⃣ Physical activity has huge potential to improve our mental and physical wellbeing. Just a brisk 10 minutes of walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood. Participation in regular physical activity can also increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety.

2️⃣ Most people blame their failure to fulfil resolutions on a lack of time, resources, or motivation. In fact, according to research only about 16 percent of people are able to follow their resolutions successfully. Instead of attributing future failures to time, resources or motivation, try setting resolutions that are more easily achievable. The same theory can applied when goal setting too.

3️⃣ Trying something new often requires a degree of courage and needing to summon courage should certainly be considered a benefit in itself. Trying something new also opens up numerous possibilities for you to enjoy something new and develop new skills, all the while helping to combat boredom.

4️⃣ Taking a holiday can greatly improve our mental health by reducing stress, depression and anxiety. It’s suggested that vacations can improve mood and reduce stress by removing people from the activities and environments that they associate with stress and anxiety. Even just a short vacation or staycation can reduce stress.
